QA Engineer Resume Keywords and Skills
By the StructuredCV team · Updated
QA engineer postings run two screens at once: test strategy (can you decide what to test, and how deeply?) and test automation (can you write and maintain the code that does it?). Most name a UI framework such as Selenium, Cypress or Playwright, API testing with Postman or REST Assured, a language like Java, Python or JavaScript, and experience running suites in a CI pipeline. Your resume should show the risk thinking and the code side by side: how many cases you automated, how much faster regression became, and which serious defects you caught before customers did.

Soft skills, and how to prove them
| Skill | What proves it on your resume |
|---|---|
| Critical thinking | A risk-based test plan where you decided what to test first, and the serious defects that approach found. |
| Precise defect reporting | Bug reports developers could reproduce on the first try, shown by a falling reopen rate or faster fix times. |
| Partnering with developers | Shift-left practices you introduced, such as reviewing acceptance criteria before coding or pairing on unit tests. |
| Persistence | An intermittent or hard-to-reproduce defect you isolated, with the root cause you found. |
| Quality advocacy | A release decision you shaped with test evidence, such as a go/no-go call backed by open-defect data. |
Action verbs for qa engineer resumes
- Designed
- Executed
- Automated
- Reproduced
- Triaged
- Verified
- Validated
- Expanded
- Stabilized
- Prioritized
- Reported
- Mapped

- Scripted
What to quantify
- Automation coverage — regression cases automated, e.g. [X] of [Y]
- Regression cycle time — hours or days per release, before and after automation
- Escaped defects — production bugs per release or per quarter
- Defect detection — share of bugs found before release versus after
- Flaky test rate — percentage of CI runs failing intermittently
- Suite runtime — minutes per CI run after parallelization
- Test scope — browsers, devices or API endpoints covered
Before and after: qa engineer resume bullets
Numbers in [brackets] are placeholders. Fill them in from your own records; never estimate a figure you can’t explain.
- Before
- Wrote automated Selenium tests so regression testing didn't take as long
- After
- Automated [N] regression test cases in Selenium WebDriver with [Java/Python], shortening the regression cycle from [X] days to [Y] hours
- Before
- Found and reported bugs
- After
- Reported [N] defects in [Jira] across [N] releases, including [N] critical issues caught before production
- Before
- Did API testing with Postman and ran the tests in Jenkins
- After
- Built a Postman suite of [N] API tests covering [N] endpoints, run in Jenkins on every [build/merge]
Common qa engineer resume mistakes
- Calling yourself detail-oriented instead of showing the defects you caught and how severe they were.
- Listing automation tools you only ran, not wrote. Interviews often include writing a locator, an assertion or a page object on the spot.
- Blending manual and automated experience so a reviewer can't tell which you have; many postings ask for one specifically.
- Counting test cases without context. "Wrote 500 test cases" says nothing about risk, coverage or what the tests caught.
- Leaving out the domain you tested, such as payments, healthcare or mobile apps, which often decides fit as much as tools do.
What to emphasize at your level
- Entry level
- Show test design fundamentals through test cases and bug reports, and include any automation you have written, even in personal projects. A public repository with a small Playwright or Selenium suite gives interviewers something to discuss.
- Mid level
- Lead with automation you built and maintain, its coverage and runtime, and how it runs in CI, so it's clear releases depend on your work.
- Senior
- Focus on test strategy across teams: frameworks you designed, quality metrics you introduced, shift-left practices you championed, and testers you hired or mentored.
Certifications worth listing
List a certification only if you hold it (or say “in progress” with an expected date).
- ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL)
- ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Test Automation Engineering (CTAL-TAE)
- ISTQB Foundation Level Agile Tester (CTFL-AT)
- ASQ Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE)
QA Engineer resume FAQ
Should a QA engineer resume focus on manual or automated testing?
Match the posting, but show automation if you have any. Many QA roles now expect some coding, so even a modest automated suite is worth a bullet. If your strength is manual and exploratory testing, present it as risk analysis: which areas you targeted, what you found and how severe it was. Keep the two kinds of experience clearly labeled so a reviewer can see each.
Is ISTQB certification worth adding to a QA resume?
Yes, if you hold it. ISTQB Foundation Level is widely recognized, and some employers list it as a requirement. It shows shared testing vocabulary rather than hands-on skill, so pair it with bullets on automation you wrote or defects you found. If you are deciding whether to take the exam, check how often it appears in postings for the jobs you want.
How do I quantify QA work?
Count what your testing changed: regression time before and after automation, escaped defects per release, critical bugs found pre-release, flaky-test rate, suite runtime, or the number of browsers, devices and endpoints covered. Your test management tool and Jira history usually hold these numbers. Where exact figures are missing, use honest ranges or counts you can explain in an interview.
Which programming language should a QA automation engineer list?
List the language your test code is actually written in, and favor the one the development team uses, since postings often ask for it. Java and Python are common for Selenium and API automation, while JavaScript or TypeScript is the norm for Cypress and common with Playwright. One language you know well, shown through a framework you built, beats three you have only read about.
