Account Executive Resume Keywords and Skills
By the StructuredCV team · Updated
Account executive job descriptions screen for one thing above all: whether you close revenue against a quota. After that, recruiters check the segment (SMB, mid-market or enterprise), deal size and sales cycle, the methodology you sell with (MEDDPICC, Challenger, SPIN, Sandler) and the CRM you work in, usually Salesforce or HubSpot. Open each role with quota attainment and stack rank, then show how you built pipeline, your average contract value and the buyers you sold to. Give attainment for each year rather than a career average, and make sure every figure matches your commission statements or rank reports.

Common account executive resume mistakes
- Giving attainment without the quota amount or year, which leaves the reader unable to judge scale or consistency.
- Showing only your best year; gaps invite questions, and some employers verify attainment with commission statements or rank reports.
- Omitting segment and deal size, so an enterprise hiring manager can't tell transactional SMB selling from long, multi-stakeholder cycles.
- Describing duties like 'managed a book of business' with no revenue, account count or growth figure.
- Burying President's Club or similar sales awards at the bottom instead of beside the role where you earned them.
What to emphasize at your level
- Entry level
- For a first closing role, show SDR or BDR results such as meetings booked, opportunities created and pipeline sourced, plus any deals you closed or co-owned and the promotion you earned.
- Mid level
- Open each role with attainment by year, stack rank and average deal size, then show the methodology and prospecting habits behind those numbers.
- Senior
- Emphasize large or strategic deals, multi-year contracts, complex buying committees, new territories or logos you opened, and informal leadership such as mentoring newer reps.
Account Executive resume FAQ
What should an account executive put at the top of a resume?
Your quota record. A short summary line followed by a first role that opens with attainment by year, stack rank and the segment you sold into gives the reviewer what they need in seconds. Put President's Club or equivalent awards right there. Methodology, tools and soft skills come afterward, as supporting evidence for those numbers.
How do I write an AE resume if I missed quota?
Be accurate and add context. Give the attainment figure, then show what else is true: your rank against peers in the same conditions, pipeline you built, large deals closed, or a territory or product change that affected the whole team. Don't round up or drop the year; sales leaders often verify numbers, and an honest explanation holds up better than an inconsistency found later.
Which sales methodology keywords matter most on an AE resume?
The ones the hiring company uses, and postings often name them. MEDDPICC and its MEDDIC variants are common in enterprise software, Challenger and SPIN appear widely, and Sandler often shows up in SMB and services sales. List only methods you have been trained in or used, and back one up with a bullet, such as a deal you qualified against MEDDPICC criteria.
Should SDR experience go on an account executive resume?
Yes. SDR or BDR work shows prospecting skill and a record against targets, both of which AE hiring managers value. Quantify it the same way: meetings set, opportunities created, pipeline sourced and attainment against your SDR quota. Note the promotion to AE if it happened, since an internal promotion shows a sales leader already trusted you to close.
